Sora was created by a group of MBA students at Kyushu University (QBS), a national university of Japan. The purpose of Sora is to raise donations for children affected by the massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11th, 2011 that caused devastating damage in the northeast of Japan. In this store, the items are priced in a “buy one, donate one” style. Thus if you buy a t-shirt, half the price is the cost of the shirt, and half the price is pure donation. All proceeds from the donation side of our equation (half of the sales price) will be donated to a local charity group to support its responses to the ongoing and urgent needs of the children in the devastated areas.

I used to do a lot of road travel with my dad. One of the place my dad visited so often was called Gunung Kawi(mt Kawi). I love going to such places (much rather than visiting another shopping mall in Orchard).

As a pilgrimage tourism village, Wonosari - Gunung Kawi (Mt Kawi) has many beautiful, special and impressive mountainous panorama, which noted as one of the most fascinating villages in the South-Western part of Malang Regency.

Most people know that this village has a special site where the tomb of grandfather Iman Soedjono, one of the seventy nobleman who took arms againts the Dutch occupation led by Prince Diponegoro in 1825 - 1830. Next to the grave of grandfather Iman Soedjono lied the tomb of grandfather Djoego or Kiai Zakaria II, a local figure who first pioneered a new technology in farming at that time.

Usually the visitors that come to visit this place believe that the pilgrimage will bring fortune to their works, the future life, such as: trading, making a health farming, etc. The suggested time to visit the sacred sepulchers is customarily on Thursday evening or "Jum'at Legi" (Javanese Calendar). The tombs themselves have long been equipped with adequate facilities for both pilgrimages and vacationers. The accessibility is reachable, public transportation or not, 30 km a way to the Southwest from Malang.

Usually, we would stay at this house owned by a paranormal (I have no idea why, but my dad always insisted of staying there). The house was quite run down and chilling, just like the owner. Being a paranormal it was not difficult to see why. I only remembered he had the longest white beard that I had ever seen. My dad told me he can foresaw the future. Not everyone can stay at his house. He would check all the guest and decided who could stay at his house, and who couldn't.

During the Thursday evening, people would play this kind music all night long:

People would stay up over midnight at the tomb - the procession always starts very late. Me, I would fell asleep before the procession started. It was something about that music and cold mountain wind. I also couldn't imagine spending my night at someone's tomb.

My recent discovery of that youtube video brings back story about this surreal place.

My working process

Let me share with you about my working process. This was a design done for Threadless loves Tom shoes, "One day without a shoe". The idea was to enhance the importance of a pair of shoes for a child.

Having been living in the country where finding food is just as difficult as living day by day, I understand how owning a pair of shoes can be very difficult. The impact of having a shoe is not in a short term, but for the long run. It is a tool that someone may need in the journey to the future. This was what I am trying to portray in the drawing.

First step:
Spending hours of elaborating idea in mind, imagining how the final outcome should be.

Second step:
Sketch, scan. I drew some pieces of the drawing seperately, because I was not so sure of how to place them to form a balance composition

Third step:
Superimposed the scanned images, used Google to find out how a boat looks like. This was one of them

Forth step:
Finalized the image. Choosed background color. Enhanced the lines.

Fifth:
Drew the children. I found it easier to add the main subjects in the Photoshop, rather than drawing them in skecth.

Sixth:
Continue with colors, found balance, enhanced the lines and details.

Seventh:
Added background and textures to bring out personality to the whole image. This is the final outcome:

Submit away!

New Website! and Bestee voting too

I decided to create a new website outlook today, while adding some new stuff. I still have many many plans ahead for 2010, and one of them was to update my website. I move my blog to blogspot, because it is much much more convenient option.

Meanwhile, last February 2009 my design Solitary Dream Pt.2 was voted Threadless Bestee of the month. Now it is time for voting again. This time, it is Threadless Bestee of the year of 2009 (which I think is the most prestigious award for t-shirt designer, up to date)! The voting will take place from now until 14 of February 2010. The winner will be annouced next March.
